Glacier View Fall Workshop
Glacier View (milepost 100-120 on the Glenn Highway) does not show up on any maps of Alaska, but Alaskans know the area well. Just north of the Matanuska Glacier, the confines of the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains open up to expansive, majestic valleys created by the Powell, Sylvester, Tarr, and Nelchina Glaciers. At peak autumn colors, the scenery is some of the most awe inspiring to be found in Alaska. Join Ray Bulson for this two and one-half day workshop exploring the surrounding landscapes and expanding your photographic skills.
On Day 1 we will convene at Sheep Mountain Lodge (milepost 113.5) for dinner. Afterwards, Ray will discuss the agenda and give a presentation on equipment and photographic techniques relevant to use in the field. Weather permitting, we may do some roadside night photography.
After meeting for breakfast at the lodge, Day 2 will be a full day photographing in the field. We will drive about five miles north to Alascom Road (milepost 118.4) for landscape photography around Knob and Trail Lakes. For views overlooking the valley and lakes we will head to the top of Alascom Road near the communications tower. Lion Head and Gun Sight Mountain provide great backgrounds and can be particularly dramatic with blue skies and topped with some termination dust. Since this is mostly roadside photography, hiking distances are minimal. We will reconvene in the evening for dinner and afterwards review the images you created.
On the morning of Day 3 we will explore other areas along the Glenn Highway near Eureka looking for good autumn landscapes. Ray will be available for consultation until 12 p.m. Participants are free to leave at the time of their choosing.
